most good aftermarket exhaust are 304 stainless,FOREVER!!! cheaper 400 series like magnaflow uses may save a little, its said to surface rust only, then theres mild steel with or without aluminizing, cheap but a short life, my vw of 10 yrs and 199,000 pipes were like new, prolly 3-5 yrs before atuminized steel pipes rot, depends how long you keep your car, 2 junk systems with install cost more than one 304 lifetime system!!!

You can buy the components such as muffler, a resonator, etc...and have an exhaust shop build one for you...generally cost around $350-$500, plus you can get the size you want.....just a cheaper alternative..this is what i plan on doing next month..just buy quality parts and don't worry about the piping most shops bend their own....good luck

a shop built system is fine but most shops crush bend pipes that loose flow bigger pipes are needed to compensate and choice of materials, how long do you want to last, will i loose savings on a cheaper system if i need to replace it, its everyones own decision, i used to replace pieces of exhaust yearly before i realized more expensive 304 stainless was cheaper for me because i keep cars quite a while, stainless also holds more heat in the pipe similar to a ceramic coating which could add a little power. i believe most aftermarket stainless systems are overpriced so shopping for specials like i did on my borla system saved me $200 off list delivery included, it was so easy to install 1.5 hr laying on my garage floor, no cutting just a few wrenches, the OE system stainless also just came apart at the factory connector and came out in one piece since its fully welded up to the connection
