2002 Passat 1.9TDI

My brother has a (German) 2002 Passat 1.9TDI auto.
a) what turbo is used for that model?
b) flashable or chip only tuning?
c) what engine performance mods are common (turbo upgrade, injectors, boost, etc.)

Any tips or links (knowing that we don't have to many US diesels here, accept a few canadians?)
