Changing your oil every 3K is a marketing ploy...don't be fooled. Every 5K is more than adequate if you use decent motor oil.

I would just meet in the middle at 4,000 Miles.

I bought my car at 52,000. I changed it at 55,000 and every 5,000 after that. It has 80,000...so far, so good.

Modern oils, especially synthetics are not prone to viscosity breakdown as quickly as the old dyno oils....
Having done oil analysis @ www.blackstone-labs.com on my 6.0 liter diesels because they take 15 qts and are quite expensive to change sometimes shows that 5000 miles is a waste of money and that the oils may last much longer than that. Oil analysis is the only way to know the 'goodness' of your oil other than - "My grandmother did it this way" ![]() To each his own, but 3k is way too often for dyno oils, much less synthetics ! (and my current Excursion has 145k miles and running strong !)

I wouldnt mess around with these VAG turbo engines. They sludge like crazy and have oil pickup tubes clog up and destroy the engines from the 10k oil changes. Theres actually bullitans from VW saying they were wrong, lower oil change intervals to 7500 and synthetic only! I personally do 5k oil changes on all synthetic oil. The way people drive, ammount of moisture that never boils out on short trips, the ammount of consumption these engines tend to have. I wouldnt push it....

10K with the VW spec synthetic is fine. All the sludge issues were pre-synthetic vw spec oil.
