Several days ago a coworker showed me an artical about a new AR round. I just had time for a quick glance but it is a .30 cal round on what looks like a beefed up 5.56 shell casing. I don't remember the ballistics but was impressive. I have always wanted a round between the 5.56 and .308. I thought the 6.8 would be "The One" but that didn't seem to work out. This "AR 30" is said to be destined for an upper to fit on an AR lower and just use a .30 mag.....I'm keeping my eyes open for this one.

Yes and no... I thought that the 6.8 SPC was the direction that the military was going and it seemed to be an improvement over the 5.56. The 6.8 just hasen't "caught on." Now there is another player in the 6.8 arena and that is Kramer with different thoughts about the 6.8. I really don't think that the 6.8 will achieve the acceptence as the 5.56 but, who knows.
The new round is the 30 Remington AR, 125 gr. @ 2278 ft/sec w/1440 ft/lb at 200 yds. It looks good at first but I took a closer look at it and it it doesnt look as good the second time around. The new round is advertised as "hitting like a .308 and carrying like a 5.56. Although the ballistics look good it's one of those "in between cartridges" In othe words, if you want the hitting power of the .308 (7.63x51) then use a .308. If you want to use the AR platform use the 5.56, if you want the .308 get a M1A. Either way you go you can use Mil-Surplus ammo. |
