Default Major fuel pump issues!

New member here, hi guys.
I've managed to snap up an '83 WR quattro which has 'customised' wiring, someone has added a few guages (water temp, second battery meter, second boot guage) and some of the connections behind the driver's console seem to have been tampered with.

I have recently had issues with power, when driving at night the battery warning light would come on. Sometimes only faintly but the more that was turned on the brighter it would get. The water temp would jump 10 degrees if you turned the fan on. Eventually the power cut out completely. I found this to be a break in the main feed to the fusebox, to bypass I ran a cable direct from the battery to replace it, everything appeared to work.

A few days later I took the car for a long run and it was great for the first 100 miles, I then stopped to pick up a friend and it refused to start after that. Eventually it did start but after 5 mins idling cut out. Left for about 10 mins it started again and managed to get half way to the petrol station across the road. We got it there, filled up and it point blank refused to start. We checked everything over we could think of and eventually ordered a tow, I used the starter to just bump the car forwards by a foot or so to park it up neatly while we waited, it started and seemed good, I drove round the block and it purred like a kitten. So we chanced it and hed for home. Perfect for 35 miles then a judder, another 2 miles and it just died, never to start again.

Now it's back at my workshop I have tested the pump, pump relay and the wiring between, all this is fine however the pump doesn't prime when you turn the key to pre-ignition. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what's going on here? I'm guessing it'll be ECU related.

Thanks
Gareth

I have just followed instructions suggesting that the hall sender may be at fault. It stated that when measuring the voltage at the hall sender:

With ignition on, check for 10V or more between pins 1 and 3. If bad, repair loom.

The voltage was 2.03v and the connection between the sender and ECU is good on all 3 pins so is this a faulty ECU issue or something else?

Check the ignition switch and the relay.

Your car is demonstrating the erratic symptoms of a bad fusebox. You probably did a partial fix when you repaired the power feed, but I can guarantee that there are other gremlins in there. It is time consuming, but a new box and thorough inpection of the wires and connectors will likely be the only way to cure these problems.

Good luck!

I had a major problem with fuel pump. About two weeks ago I was going back home from school and noticed that car wasn't accelerating as it should. Still the car was running normally. After staying home for 20 minutes car didn't start anymore even how hard I tried. All the fuses and everything else was okay. I changed the fuel pump and fixed the problem. Please suggest on this

Thanks to everyone for replying. I have tested the pump, relay and associated wiring and all appears to be fine. Shorting out the relay socket allows the car to be started.

I have heard jump starting the quattro can cause issues. Does anyone think a jump start could fry an ECU?
