to buy up some rare lic plate, idiots spend thousands of GBP on that sort of crap.
Their lic plate issue system is nothing like ours from what I understand. You can buy a lic plate in GB and register it to your car, but you cant get vanity plates like we have here in the states. |

in germany plates are made like that:
x- xx 1234 (big towns have 1 letter to designate area) B - SK 1234 Berlin - my initials and numbers xx - xx 1234 (a little smaller area) HH - sk 1234 hannover xxx-xx 1234 (very small area) lds - sk 1234 landkreis dahme spreewald you cant get anything written on your tags at all all german plates nowadays dont have the "-" anymore its the area | 2 letters | and the number Gov tags are area | number diplomats have 0 | and then the number for the country they represent followed by the car number 0 1-12 ( diplomat | usa | car 12

In downtown London I once saw a car with the number R100AD. Probably the most famous one is a 1930s Rolls-Royce with PEN15 on the plates.
As far as I know, the system is similar to the US/Canada system in that the only restriction is the number of characters - vanity numbers don't have to follow a particular scheme. The big difference is that in GB cars retain their plates even when they are sold or the owner moves to a different area, so the number remains the same as long as the car is not registered anywhere outside the UK. Hence the only way to get a vanity number that's already taken is to buy the car that has that number, scrap it and transfer the number to your car. In Austria, things are different: Austrian vanity plates expire after 15 years, after that you either have to buy the number back or go for a different number. Austrian vanity plates follow a specific scheme: The first 1-2 digits denote the district in which the car is registered. For example, W stands for Vienna, LA for Landeck, BZ for Bludenz etc. On a regular plate, these are followed by 1-5 digits and 1-3 letters, with a total length of 4-6 characters (plus the district code). For example: W 26773 M LA 1 ATH LA 902 AL The XX 1 XXX scheme has been abandoned - maybe because it led to a large number of "ambiguous" plates, especially in the Imst (IM) district: IM 2 GAY IM 4 FUN IM 4 SEX IM 1 BOY (when assigned to a rather masculine-looking woman) IM 2 FAT (when combined with a, well, circumferentially challenged driver) And all of these were regular plates which could have been assigned to any unsuspecting citizen registering their new car. Vanity plates also include the district code, followed by 1-5 letters and at least one digit, but also restricted to six characters. Such as: IM AUDI 2 LA OOO 1 (these are O (oh)'s, not zeroes) |
