Default excellent

maybe just trim the ends of the histogram a little or play with curves (s-curve)

this is how I'd do it (shadows/highlights adjustment in PS CS2)

hope you don't mind, but let me know if you do...

Default More "pop" or less?

I've been messing with the lightness curve in CS-2 and I'm just getting dizzy with it. Shadow / Highlight seems crude.

Default FYI: It was shot RAW so I could go into lightroom and work it that way as well.

i spent the entire day yesterday around navy pier, millenium park, the lake front, etc and couldn't believe how many things and people i could have shot.

Default shadow/highlight can actually be very refined

the default is too crude, I agree, but play with radius and amount of shadow and highlight...

Don't know much about Lightroom - I'm on windows 2000 and Lightroom only works on XP...

For more "pop" in photoshop CS just go to curves and pring the right part of the curve a bit up and the left part a bit down (pick it up about 1/4 from each side) to resemble a flattened S.

Or go to Levels and see if either side of the histogram is flat at the end - then move the sliders to where it picks up. Also play with the mid slider to adjust midtone contrast
