Just about every automotive journalist right now is talking about clean diesel technology as the Next Big Thing. Even though ULSD fuel availability is only weeks away, 50 state compliant Audi TDI engines will probably not show up here until 2008.

While they are at it, why not meet both the EPA Tier 2/Bin 5 and the Euro 5 emission standards in order to cut their overall development costs? That being said, what are they going to do about NOx reduction required by these new standards?

Well, Audi just announced they are licensing the BLUETEC technology from Bosch and Mercedes-Benz since the BLUETEC technology now meets the 50 state emissions requirements. Bluetec is a urea-based lean NOx trap (LNT) which will require consumers to be involved in their emission compliance by ensuring that they periodically service the BLUETEC system (likely paired with an oil change).

I have also noticed that the price of diesel does not vary as quickly as normal gasoline and is currently more expensive. I expect the lag in pricing has more to do with limited refining capacity.
