Is optical digital audio output inferior to HDMI audio output?

Not if the signal is Dolby Digital, DTS or 16-24 BiT CD sound.
HDMI can do things optical cannot, such as carry the Hi-Rez digital signals (TrueHD, DTS-HD/MA, SACD DVD-Audio).
If you have an HDMI out on your source (HD box/DVR, DVD or Blu-ray), you may as well use it as it carries both audio and video, digitally.

Source is bluray... right now HDMI from bluray to TV and optical from bluray to receiver.
Didn't have an extra HDMI out for bluray to receiver to tv.
Will go out and purchase extra hdmi cable because source will do TrueHD.

Just reading some more in the manual - I dont think it will except hdmi audio so the point is moot.
