Default friends kid wont get off myspace / aim...

what is the best way to block those websites from their house? i know there is nanny-software that can do this, but it seems that there might be a way to do this with the router / gateway...

any ideas?

Default Couple of things

1. If your friend has a router then get me the info and I'll provide instructions
2. Block it directy at the PC

Steps (assuming windows box):
1. Find hosts file (in XP it's c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc)
2. Open the hosts file with Notepad
3. Under 127.0.0.1 localhost place the following entry:
127.0.0.1 myspace.com
4. Save and close
5. Now try to get to myspace from the pc in question

Default i think this needs to be dialed back a notch...

the friend only wants to limit access to said services. she wants to allow daughter to use aim and myspace after homework, etc. any suggestions that would allow an admin to control access to set ip's / sites? she'd like to be able to verify that homework is done, then grant access. at the same time, something that could log what *other* sites are being used too would be quite helpful

I think you need 3rd party software. I don't have any recommendations off the top of my head but I'd look at PC Magazine or something similar for a comparison.

Default kid needs to type reports, etc. plus, how do you control these things when your not home?

they've taken her ethernet cable before, but its such a drag with the kid actually needs to do real homework on the computer and basic internet access, and then you bust her on AIM or myspace.
