Default I don't have the numbers here, but I will answer the oddest one...

Yes, the CD changer reference is correct in Audi speak. Of all things, the actual box the AMI unit comes in is a CD changer box, and that is Audi's part description on their warehouse inventory tracking sticker too.

I know from being the first known guy to self install this in a D3 and have it work right out of the box. Maybe the only D3'er so far, though others are hot on the trail too--there was one earlier C6 post (the one with a lot of pics) that got it in while my parts were on order. Several have posted they had the dealer do it.

For reference, inside the box that says and even pictures a "Genuine CD autochanger" (I'm reading off the box) is the AMI "brain" that fits into the second CD slot to the right of your existing unit--unless that is you have an early one without two drive bays in the glove box by chance. Thus, unlike me, you won't have the experience on seeing the box at first and saying, oh %^$#, they sent me the wrong d^$* part.

If you search the archives, you will find the details on this and the right parts numbers.

Default More and new parts info on cable. HarrySK, also take note.

You have the right cable harness # for the "retrofit kit": 4F0 051 592A.

BUT, my install instructions say in turn that consists of two things, the cable and the installation instructions book. The harness # is shown in the instructions as a separate number: 4F0 055 307B. If you care, the book number is WSK 014 720A. Those two together make up the "retrofit kit" with its part number. Thus, maybe the cable alone is fewer $$, which was Harry SK's question about alternatives a few days back.

Default Here's a ebay listing that shows all the part numbers...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=330211232877

Seems your interface # is not same(?)

4E0 035 785 is the sticker on the interface

Default Its not the same, but it really is the same...confused yet????? My final answer from the install...

This part number is completely screwed up by Audi.

BUT, bac2h has the correct part number for the AMI unit to order for the A8, based on both my experience that it is working in my A8 and that the install instructions reference that part number. Once again, that part number is 4E0 057 785.

HOWEVER, They will call that a "CD Changer." And per my other posts, it even comes in an Audi box with a picture of the CD changer on the outside. But on the inside of this "CD" box is a set of molded styrofoam carved to fit the AMI unit, with the AMI unit in the middle of it. Apparently they got a real good deal on about 5 million CD changer boxes. (Oh and by the way, the AMI install instructions actually say the CD changer part number actually ends in 110).

BUT WAIT, there's more. Brucetimev8 is right too...because when you actually get to the AMI unit inside the box, it has the part number 4E0 035 785 on the label, just like in his ebay picture. To be sure of this, I pulled my unit out of the A8 glove box enclosure just now; sure enough that middle part of the number says "035" on the AMI sticker itself. I remember now when I saw this on the install I figured maybe they cannabalized the old CD part number for the outer box and label, but the inner part number is this "035" one. Regardless, screwed up packaging and part numbers and descrptions and all, the number that I used for my order, the number that is on my Clair receipt and the number that is on the outside of the box all agree: 4E0 057 785.

Ok reviewing the numbers I ordered:

4E0 057 785, called a "CD changer"; actually has AMI unit with number 4E0 035 785 inside the box.

4F0 051 592A, called a "Retrofit Kit"; includes both the optical and electrical cable in one integrated harness and the umpteen language installation manual. Repeating, the manual says the cable part number by itself is 4F0 055 307B if you want to try that route and if Audi even stocks it that way stand alone. That is the part number on the plastic bag that I got with the cable inside of it. Of course, adding to the fun the plastic bag label says "Nach. AMI-CDC Audi Q7" Nothing about an A8 or any other Audi model. Obviously ignore that.

4F0 051 510E, called "Adapter for iPod." I think the one with the A suffix is the MP3 generic type for reference.

So, no doubt Audi delayed the AMI intro for so long so it could get all these part numbers neat and tidy... Oh yeah, and for those of you who owned an Audi and tried to order parts at the start of 2000, their fab parts system basically shut Audi parts USA down for weeks on end when they installed it to enable this new Germanic precision.
