Vag-Com 3.11 Vista workaround.
I am not sure where to post this so I will post it here. I know the newest version works with Vista but I have no intention of buying a new cable and software if I don't have to.
Since installing Windows Vista on my tablet pc I have been unable to run Vag-Com 3.11. I use 3.11 because I have an old "dumb" cable that only works with 3.11 and 409.? After much trial and error, I have come up with a work around that seems to work.
1st install Microsoft .Net framework 1.1
2nd install Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT 5.0)
3rd run Compatibility Administrator (run as administrator by right clicking and select run as administrator)
4th select Fix
5th follow the onscreen prompts. You are basically setting up a shell to run the vag com program through.
6th select run
It is a little more involved than I listed above, if you want more assistance email me.

so you're posting this on the forum....
that is sponsored by the people who make a living developing the software and hardware that you "have no intention of buying".
I'm sure they'll appreciate it.

yes, because I already bought it. And don't see the need to buy it again and
Your underlying idea is correct. We should close down these forums to stop depriving Audi techs of their livelihoods.

I made an assumption that I shouldn't have....
the assumption that you didn't buy either a cable or software license from Ross-Tech. There seems to be a lot of folks who come on here with various workarounds, and questions related to getting their software to work without paying a dime to the folks who are doing all of the R&D to develop this stuff.
The annoyance is compounded by the fact that any one scan tool for a single make of vehicle can cost me between 4 and 15 grand, so seeing folks bitch about spending $350 on a tool that eclipses the factory VW/Audi tool really gets under my skin.
so, with that said, sorry 'bout that.
