The S60R is a totally different animal as compared to the new S4. Both articles I have read talked about how the S60R's ESP program interfered soon and often. They liked the strait line performance but couldn't get a feel for if the car really liked the corners due to an overactive stability program. The other downside is you can't turn the ESP
off in the S60 like you can in other cars that are performance minded. The ESP on the new S4 lets the car get fairly far out before it kicks in and you can switch it off completely. The S60R looks like a very hot car unfortunately Volvo made if for the take your kids to practice/dance lessons crowd. |

I like NA over turbo as well, as long as you don't plan on modding too much. The dealer loaned me an 18 minute video on the S60R and it actually looks quite impressive. Although there will be some turbo lag, keep in mind that the torque peaks at 2100 rpm which is quite low. I always thought my S4 had tons of low end torque although it was a turbo car. It peaked at 1950 rpm which isn't much lower than the Volvo.

While I don't think the S60R will beat the S4 in many if any categories I did find out that the S60R Volvo sent out for press reviews was found to have the XC90 SUV's software loaded for the AWD setup! Volvo was embarrassed and fixed the issue and from what I read reinvited the journalists to try the car again. I suspect it will be even more warmly received (and most press on it is favorable) but again it wasn't meant to beat the M3 or S4 (and can't be expected to at a price under $37k.)
