- UPDATES!!! -
I UPDATED TIMES AND LOCATIONS AND DIRECTIONS BELOW, please read on.... Hello all, sorry for the seeming procrastination here... Been trying my @$$ off to scout the trip before-hand, couldn't make it happen...work. I made many calls and left many e-mails, and nobody seems to be working with me on this one. I HIGHLY doubt that there will be enough parking at the summit for any of us to park, so don't plan on staying with the group if you plan on stopping, as many will be unable to do so. Anybody down for heading over to Lookout Mountain after the descend? Looks like the BBQ fell through on us this year... I also am given the impression that none will be able to drive/park without a Park Pass, which is (bad word) ridiculous. The Clear Creek rangers all insist that we will all have to pay, but I will refuse, as should you. I had hoped that we could possibly let some stay at the summit for a few minutes, take turns, etc... the nearest parking lot is only 15 minutes from the summit, at the Summit Lake parking lot.... here is a briefing from a recent e-mail I recieved this morning... "The lot at the top should hold at least 30 vehicles. There was some recent controversy between the State and the Forest Service regarding the fees on Mt Evans. It has been resolved and I believe you will find that you will need to pay the fee just to drive into the the area regardless of whether you stop or not. The fee was never a "parking fee". You may want to contact the forest service if you have an additional questions about Mount Evans Fees. Clear Creek Ranger Station: 303-567-3000 (8:00am to 4:30pm)" Anybody with more info on this - please speak up at the meet on Sunday, I hope to contact the forest service before then. Maybe have them on speed-dial if we encounter any problems (on a Sunday...?) We kind of have to play this one by ear, I'm not sure what will happen until we drive to the gates. BBQ fell through this year. Feel free to stop and grab a bite before and after and during the pit-stops. There should be plenty of time after the summit descent before Lookout Mountain for a fast-bite to eat. Reason for Lookout Mountain - a meeting place near I-70, as some of the members won't be joining until Idaho Springs. (BTW - planning on meeting near the McDonalds and gas stations nearest 241A). I'm also going for the view, if you've never been, I recommend seeing. A fun little winding road follows down the other side of the mountain and places you back on highway 6 to 470, I-70, 58, 93... ----- READ ON FOR SPECIFICS --- Modified original message follows: ----- Last year, around 18 Audis (old and new) joined as we climbed the famous Pike's Peak near Colorado Springs, CO. We had a blast as a 1/4 mile of enthusiasts drove through Garden of the Gods, then went on to climb the 14,000+ foot mountain. This year, to attract more drivers, we decided to drive the HIGHEST PAVED ROAD IN AMERICA. 'Tis the season to take some pictures, videos, and meet fellow enthusiasts. Evans Rd, 15? miles to summit. TO LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN RD: - From Idaho Springs, continue WEST on I-70 to Exit 240 'Genesee Park' - Make a left at the stop sign and follow the signs to Lookout Mountain Rd. Found out last month that the "fee" to drive up isn't really a fee to drive the road. The "fee" can only be charged if you use any of the facilities maintained by the National Forest Service. The road is state owned. If you drive up the road, park at the top, and drive back down, it's free!!!
That might make it a little cheaper. ![]() Rick |

I've heard what I thought might be the "dentist drill" sound a couple of times on Monday, but not since. There's a chance that it may be something else. However, I believe that I do have an issue with the turbo oil supply line that I'm going to take care of regardless.
