Im torn fellas. U see this drunk driver destroyed my baby (1991 VW GTI 2.0 8v) and u know how Audi's and VW's are in the same family. Well i need a daily driver until i can find another Golf or GTI that i can modify. The 2 cars i have found that are really close to me are;
1981 Audi 4000 sedan FWD 186,000 miles, no power accessories,no power steering, bad ac, good heat, 1.7L 4cylinder 8V engine, 5sp,manual no rust, clean car, the mechanic (I know him very well) that is selling it says that he has serviced this car since new and it was bought new by one of my professors here at school. It ran nicely (suspension was FAR from my GTI but i mean i had so much into that car), no jerking or hesitating, was a good daily driver. $500 firm he was asking. now my 2nd choice 1984 Audi 4000 Quattro AWD sedan. Power everything, 130,000 miles,5cylinder 2.2L (i could be wrong here ???) 10 valve 5 sp manual, lowered 1.5" on some 4x105 16inch BBS wheels with 2 bald tires. This car was slid into a wall, has a door that leaks and does not match the car, has a few electrical problems, a few bent wheels, bad engine mount, front cv joints click, and the passenger seat is stuck in "pimp mode". But according to the owner (my friend) "it runs like a champ". He wants about $800 (I could talk him down to $600 or $700 possibly). Now my question is...what should i get? I want that audi quattro AWD so bad for the winters up here in central pennsylvania..that will be soo much fun. But i know the quattro will be more money to keep running than that non quattro 4000. HELP ME! I dont know anythinga bout audi's so im relying on u guys. Daren -91 2.0 8v GTI...R.I.P. |

The quattro sounds like it would be a lot to get it to where it would be right(nothing leaking, everything straight and working), but the '81 FWD sounds like it would just run without too much upkeep(read: money that can later be spent souping up another GTI) involved with owning it. As for the quattro issue, I'm all for quattro, but how hard was it really to make it through the winter on FWD? I'm in northern VA, which has similar winters, and my Scirocco does just fine during those months(the 4kq has been broken for a while now...engine blew up, my fault entirely). Just out of curiosity, did you have a bore/stroke or ABA conversion done to the GTI, or was that '2.0 8v' supposed to be '2.0 16v'?

Yea it was a 2.0 ABA 8v block out of a 98 cabrio. Yea im from Northern VA also...Reston actually. I go to school in Central PA (winters are not brutal at all cuz we are in the valley right next to the Susquehanna River...we get 4-5 inches the most of snow, the mountanous areas get more) So i think my little 80hp or whatever 4000 non-q audi with 13 inch tires could battle thru the snow EASILY. Hey what is the bolt pattern on the 81 4000's? 4x100? Please say it is! PLEASE!

If you are getting some decent cash for the wreck I would definately shop around and pick up a newer 4000 quattro for you new vehicle. As for now, do not buy the pimp mobile. Sounds like a money pit.
Dennis I have had 17 VW's and one Audi. _____________I drive the Audi

I was torn with the very same conumdrum. Let me answer this way, I sought out the person I sold my 1984 4KQ to a few years previous and ended up buying it back. The car is THAT great.
Just my $0.02 Carl

The quattro version is 4x108(yeah, weird, huh?), but the FWD is 4x100, so the rims you had on your GTI will fit it.
Reston isn't too far from me, about an hour or so, I live in Winchester, but grew up in nearby West Virginia, in the heart of the area's mountains(beautiful scenery, even if the people were quasi-inbred). Winters up there were pretty brutal sometimes, and I learned to drive in the middle of the '96 blizzard, so to me, anything can be driven in the snow. :P By the way, I don't suppose you want to sell that ABA block, do you? My Scirocco is itching for a little more power...

I took that to mean that he didn't want to have to put a lot of money into it, which would make the '81 a better buy. Did you see his list of what was wrong with the quattro?

the front CV joints are obvioulsy dried out (probably lost the boots). the bent rims wouldn't normally be a problem, except that they're 16" and are on a car that has been lowered. I suppose you could drive it like that, but it would suck. the leaky door is also very bad, i don't know if anyone has ever left a window open and let their window switches get wet, but I can tell you, there's a lot of smoke, and a lot of melting. i'd go for the non-quattro, sounds like a better value, and would make a much better beater, or even a better all the time car.
