![]() Last night, my wife is sitting watching TV and hears this incredibly loud, metallic sound from the garage. Somewhat scared, she comes and gets me from upstairs and I check everywhere in and around the garage but find nothing. Today, she takes the car out in the morning and hears a clunking noise in the left front but otherwise the car runs and handles fine. This evening, I jack up the car and inspect the front suspension. Check out what I found sitting in the left front spring perch. It is two thirds of the bottom coil of the spring! Just broke clean off, all on its own. I've never seen or heard of anything like this before. Fatigue or poor metallurgy are the only two possible explanations I can think of. For a bit of background, this car is a 88 5000S Quattro, it is babied, garaged, never curbed or driven hard, everything works and has no rust. |

My 87 did the same thing about 1994, 75K miles!
The coil hung on to the spring and it took me a while to find the source of the clinking! |
