My Audi has learned a new trick this weekend. I drove the car for the first time in a month and it started to have semi-harsh downshifts it is not terrible but you can fell it when you are almost stoped less then 10mph and then you fell it going into the next gear and some times when you go from lets say 55-45mph you feel a slight downshift. I am going in for a power flush. I have been doing some searching on the net and it sounds like it could be the control soloniod. Does anyone have any other insight to this. I hope it is not anything that is serious.
Thanks, Steve

There is no dipstick on the V8 I am not sure where to check it. I have not seen any evidence of tranny fluid leaking.

This is probably a silly question - but you haven't by any chance left the SEM switch in S - that will make the transmission to downshift a lot earlier that it would otherwise ?

On the 5-cylinders, it's a rather obvious dipstick with orange tag on driver's side of engine bay. Not sure about V8. If I were you, I'd obtain both an owner's manual and shop manual.

On V8's the dipstick is not included with the car. You have to go to Audi and purchase this item, cost approx. $20.00.
If you don't have a dipstick then you can drain the transmission fluid and replace it with 4 quarts. |

I guess on a $50K car they needed to cut costs so they did not give a dip stick. lol

I am under the assumption that the fluid is dextron type 3 am I correct? The car goes in Thursday for a power wash on the tranny and they will need to know the fluid type.
Thanks,

No, actually it's because they (Audi) had customer complaints about broken gearboxes - that was because people didn't read the manual when refilling the autotrans - the correct procedure is that the oil temp must be above 80 °C (Celsius) before one checks the oil level - hence the missing dipstick - if you fail to do that, you'll overfill the transmission causing it to fail in bad ways :-)
