My water pump has gone out and needs to be replaced on my 1986 5000. I need to know if anyone has any idea what a grinding noise could have been when when I last had the car out. It sounded kinda of like a chain making a noise while the car was running. This noise started the day I parked the car. I knew the water pump was going bad, but I was still driving the car making sure everyday there was plenty of fluid in the car. I parked it when this noise started. Any ideas?

The idler pulley or the water pump could be rubbing on the cover. Remove the power steering belt, then take off the top of the front cover, put the power steering belt back on, then restart the car. You may even notice metal flakes or wear in the cover.
