Default "Normal auto transmission operation" Feedback please.

Today, someone drove my 92 100 CS and proclaimed there must be something wrong with the auto tranny. This, because when going into overdrive, it goes in hard. This was from a guy who is interested in buying it and naturally wanted to deduct big time from what I'm asking.

I told him it was like this since I bought it in 96. The transmission was also replaced about 20K later for a different problem (leak through seam in casting). The new tranny (brand spanking new direct from Audi America) which was replaced under 100% waranty, felt exactly the same as the original.

Here's how it feels: Shifts normally, as you'd expect any car to shift up through third. Then it goes up to about 45 and seems to shift twice, first easilly and rpms fall a little, then harder when it locks up and rpms drops even more.

If I ease up on the gas at about 40 MPH, it will shift earlier and the shift is felt even more. This is my normal way of driving because I like to get it into the highest gear quickly to get better MPG. (Yes for me it's always about MPG)

Anyhow, how about one or two of people with similar cars tell me if you experience the same thing with your cars. I think they changed trannys in 95 or 96, so my request is only for those with same vintage as my 92.

Thanks

Default Acutally, the early 92's had a different tranny than the later 92's and...

It was an AZB designation, which they only used in the early production 92's (I know because this is the model I have, it's kind of rare and you know you have it if you have a "Sport" button next to the shift lever).

Anyway, the shift pattern you describes sounds exactley like mine. That shift into overdrive is a little hard, my rpms will increase a little, then shift into gear with a little jerk. It's been like that for the last year and a half that I've had the car. Tell the guy it's absolutely normal for that tranny.

It is a wierd shift if you've never felt it before, like it just goes through 2 gears all of a sudden. Good luck with the sale.

Default Are you sure it's not the torque converter you're feeling?

Default Mine does the exact same thing. That's why I use the 3rd gear so much...

Anything under 40mph, I leave it in 3rd. If I *know* I'm about to go over 40 and stay there, I'll move it to D.

Mine will shift "normally" into 4th from 3rd if I have a moderate pressure on the gas (not accelerating, just maintaining speed). But it will jerk violently if I let off the gas completely and let it shift (coasting down a hill, for example).

Mine also does a downshift thing: in 4th, begin climbing a hill, it gets to about 1800 rpm IIRC, then shifts to third. However, in that shift it goes to like 2600 rpm, then down a couple hundred RPM, then up like 500 rpm. So now, noticing the hill, I'll put it in third when I'm ready. It shifts fairly hard into third.

Still, the thing keeps going... just hit 172k yesterday. I've had it since 133k. Never changed fluid or filter on it.

I'm really glad you asked, 'cause I thought mine was dying.

Default I had this thought too. I can't remember who I asked, but they definitely said the torque converter

*can* break. I don't mess with transmissions. Maybe someday, but don't WANT to deal with them.

BTW, there's a 4000csQ for sale here for like $350.. needs a clutch

Default older model transes have harder 3-4 gear shift to save clutches from slipping which means that

faster and harder shift=less time for clutch to slipp.Second shift you feel is your torque converter locking up.And as youguys said the transes with sport button are gonna shift exectly as you explain

My '92 100CSq (2/92 production), upshifts and downshifts smoothly to and from overdrive - no noticeable clunk. We've only had the car a few months, and it has approx. 78K miles. I had the filter and fluid changed as a pre-caution, but the trans shifted smoothly before and after.

Same as mine. I have had the car for almost 2 years and it hasn't changed a bit. At first I thought something was wrong but I have since learned that it is common on early 92 models.
