Default Ignition switch recall "KB" campaign information...

My '96 A6 FWD Avant was starting to have difficulties with the A/C and turn signals not working upon startup. With some input from this forum, I deduced that my ignition switch was failing like so many others have experienced. I thought that this problem was fixed on my vehicle because when I purchased it in 10/96, the local Audi dealer performed the "KB" recall. However, after removing my failed switch and installing the replacement, I did some checking re: the KB campaign and the ignition switch. In short, the recall covers only the following parts:

* Ignition lock, P/N 4A0 905 851J (for '95/'96 A6, number is slightly different for earlier 100s)
* Nut, P/N 902 867 01
* Nut, P/N 011 184 9

The ignition electrical switch that cracks is P/N 4A0 905 849, which not part of the recall. This information is listed in the NHTSA documentation for the "KB" recall. So, when your ignition ELECTRICAL switch starts to fail, Audi is not covering it under the recall, even if it is an apparent defect (as noted by the new and improved black case switch). Since the switch costs $40 - $45, its a fairly easy and cheap DIY repair.

Default Re: Ignition switch recall "KB" campaign information...

I have the problem with the ignition switch and in the process of replacing it but I ran into a problem. In trying to back out the switch after loosening the holding screws, I just cannot seem to find the room to get it out, so maybe I am doing something wrong. I attached a url where some pictures are posted of what it looks like in that area behind the instrument panel. After getting the screws loosen it certainly seems like I was on my way to getting the repair done.

Let me know what you think and if there is anything you can see from the pictures that I may be missing.

I can move back the switch with the cable assembly attached (in the picture this is the purple part, correct) but not far enough to completely disengage.

Default Here's how I removed the switch....

* Remove the plastic cover off of the ignition interlock by pulling up on the far end and rotating it (its the black part on top of the interlock).
* Slide the emergency lights relay & its holder off of the metal brace and move out of the way.
* Before lossening the screws, disconnect the wiring plug by pushing it off the switch (comes off fairly easy). Once disconnected, move it down and away from the switch.
* Lossen the setscrews and then slide the switch out of the ignition lock assembly. Once clear, rotate the switch so that it can be removed to the right of the ignition lock assembly, as you show in your last photo.
* Installation is reverse of the above steps.

It helps if your hands are not extremely large to accomplish this replacement. I had to remove the new switch for an adjustment last night and had it out of the car within 15 minutes from the time I started. Hope that this helps.
