GAMMA Radio Information & Unlocking Procedure

GAMMA HEAD UNIT

The radio goes into SAFE mode to prevent theft. While I think it's a useless feature (who steals car radios anymore, anyway?) that just makes more work for everybody including you, the owner, you will probably have to deal with this, and Audi still has the feature in new cars today.

To unlock your radio, you will need your RADIO CODE ... this is a 4-digit number that is assigned to your radio head unit.

If you don't have this number, your fate is in the hands of your local area Audi dealer. Good luck? (They can look it up based on your radio head unit serial number.)

Two versions of Audi OEM CD changers are compatible with the Gamma radio (in Bose-equipped systems), one is 6-disc, one is 10-disc. The 6-disc version part # is 4A0 035 111. The 10-disc version is no longer available. CD changers were not available as an option on the Audi 90 or the Cabriolet.

SAFE mode unlock procedure for Gamma head unit

1) Park car. (Note: Experienced radio unlockers have been known to perform this task while driving, but it is extremely dangerous and may result in a fatal crash. Not advised.)

2) Turn radio on. SAFE will show in the display. (Note: The car does not have to be on, nor does the key have to be in the ignition or in any position.)

3) Press the hold the FM1 and AM buttons simultaneously and hold until "1000" shows on the display. Release the buttons. Do NOT press these buttons again, otherwise the radio will consider "1000" to be the code.

4) Enter your radio code. Use the radio station preset buttons (1, 2, 3, 4) to enter the four-digit code number from your radio card. Preset button 1 corresponds to the first digit, Preset button 2 corresponds to the second digit, etc. Each press of the button increments the number by 1. So for example, if your code was 1927 you would press...

- 1 0 times
- 2 9 times
- 3 2 times
- 4 7 times

Which would show 1927 in the display.

5) Once you have your code entered in the display, repeat step 3 until 'SAFE' displays again. Once 'SAFE' displays, release the buttons. The radio should return to the station it was on when it went into safe mode. Your radio is now unlocked.

If your radio is still locked then you entered the incorrect code.

When an incorrect code is entered, the word 'SAFE' appears in the display again, first flashing and then continuously. You can repeat the above steps to unlock the radio once more. If an incorrect code is entered again, the radio will be locked for about an hour. After one hour, you may try again twice before it locks again for an hour.

I got a replacement radio, got the code off guy i bought it off, turned out the code was wrong.
Anyway I put the code in twice and "Safe" flashed and then stayed on, so i waited a about three hours and went to try again
pressed FM1 and AM and nothing happened
It wont let me retry.
So i waited 24 hours and tried again nothing happened,.. radio is lit up still saying SAFE.
Any Ideas
I have a gamma and a 93 100s.
