Default An alternative to roof-mounted bicycle racks..

As an alternative to the roof-mounted bike rack, I use the Thule Model 948 Hitchin' Post, a towbar-mounted system. Utilizes the Model 949 Zip Stick for lateral stability.

Worked quite well at highway (80mph) speeds, and over bumps.

Photo taken on the Washington coast, north of Aberdeen.

Default What hitch have you got? Do you use a factory hitch with an adaptor for the down-pointing receiver?

I'm still a big fan of the roof rack... Minimal contact with the bike, absolute stability. =)

Default Factory hitch; no adapter needed as the hitch bolts directly onto the drawbar....

...a bolt extending into the hole where the ball would normally be mounted.

Default I do that on my Eurovan! Many different hitch racks out there. Very easy and aerodynamic!

This was taken outside Cannon Beach in Oregon.

Default Good to know, thanks!

Happen to have any pics of the hitch mount?

Default Part of the motivation for the towbar hitch is that it also works on my pickup w/ camper!

Default Wonder if this would fit my A6. Tell me more about how the Thule mates to the car?

I saw the pic of the polished tow hitch (the round bit). Does this come off, and the Thule bolt on in its place? Is there a hidden part that needs to be installed, such as this...Hidden trailer hitch mount?
