The tuning is accomplished by using a "port"...typically a round tube but can be any shape if you take the time to calculate the dimensions properly. You can't just stick any old port in any old box. The port length and diameter are very specific to the enclosure size and specs of the speaker you plan to use. Generally, Ported boxes play louder (at the tuned frequency) with a given amount of power compared to a sealed box...BUT handle less power overall, produce distortion more easily due to uncontrolled cone flap, and typically roll off steeply from the tuning frequency (meaning the output above and below the tuning frequency diminishes fairly rapidly. If you're looking for maximum SPL, ported is a good choice. If you're looking for best sound quality...tight, accurate bass...sealed is a better choice. Sealed boxes are also typically much smaller also.

While yes, some prefer certian types of enclosures, you can usually always design a box of a different type and still have it sound very good.
Most of the better speaker manufacturers have good websites with pictures and dimensions of different boxes to use with their speakers. If not, call the Manuf and ask! |

looks like that thing can handle tons of power. I prefer sealed. With a sub like that and with the right power you should be able to hit real tight while also getting some nice lower frequency tones as well.

Subs are typically designed for a specific application...some can be used in several enclosure types and they will suggest the best specs for each.

Depending on what model you have, a 1-1.25 ft2 sealed or 2-2.5 ft2 box is what you'd want for the 12". I'd personally suggest the sealed box and 500-1000w myself. The below link should hook you up with the info you need.[list][*]<a href="http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/scripts/rightnow.cfg/php.exe/enduser/fattach_get.php?p_sid=F8ixq27h&p_tbl=9&p_i d=156&p_created=1050097912">http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/scrip...attach_get.php
