Default Auto-X weekend, huge tire fitment, etc

This weekend was my first opportunity to try out my new 245/45/17 hoosiers. Hoosier rubber runs wider than indicated usually. For instance, the difference between my 225 kumho and 245 hoosier is not less than an inch, as the 20mm difference would lead you to believe, but 1.5 inches! Anyway, I was a little worried they wouldn't fit in the front wheel wells without rubbing on hard corners under compression, etc. Not to worry! They were awesome! Very crisp turn in, loads of grip, fun to drive. FYI, these are 17x8 wheels with a 40mm offset, with 20mm spacers all around, so an effective offset of 20mm.

And a couple action shots of my codriver

Default I bet that was a HUGE test on your springs!! I can't imagine the TT on slicks.

How were your times, and how were your co-driver's?

What class do you run in? There aren't any letters on your car...

Default Street Mod

the first day, times were alright, turns out I forgot to torque the bolts on the left front (Doh!) and we started to get a wierd wobble. by the time i figured it out, it was last run.

Second day was better, the car rotates really well, very neutral. My codriver is usually in a apr stg III gti, and he liked the balance a lot. very impressed with the difference quattro makes.

he was 1/10th faster on sunday

in fun runs, i found another 7/10ths, dammit! There was a nasty slow corner that we had been experimenting with all day, either staying in 2nd and allowing torque to pull us out or staying in first and giving up on top speed on the entrance (it was the second corner). times were within a 10th either way. I finally tried short shifting to second for speed on entry, then downshifting to 1st for the corner exit, there was my time. I think I had another 2/10ths there as well. Oh well, now I know. I just hate to have to downshift on most courses, they seem to slow you down more than the percieved power increase. Not so yesterday.

BTW, we are still about 1.5 seconds behind a very well prepped e30 M3. My next mod has got to be coilovers with stiff springs! the eibach prokit's do really well for a street spring, but there is room for improvement.

Default Most of the people driving "imports", even at auto-x

are not very experienced drivers, and most of them stay in the STS/X classes which don't allow race rubber. My codriver do a couple laps in an s2000 on street tires and on the course that we were turning 40.7's he couldn't get below 45's. Usually the only cars faster than us in our region, and this depends on course design, are the Z06's and the fully prepared corvettes. I chalk most of that up to driver experience, as there are plenty of capable cars out there. On any given day, we can be faster than a Z06 or even the Viper that comes out, although he is getting much better. Our class consists of me, said E30, and my codriver this weekend in his usual APR'd GTI. sometimes we'll get another car or two, but nobody consistent.

Default Wrong size tire. 225/45/17 becomes 255/40/17. Your speedo will read about 3% slow.

Default Thanks for the heads up dood...

I know this. That's why I was concerned about rubbing. I don't give a crap about my speedo.
