Aka "ground effects". Unfortunately there was still too much rear lift in the first production TT's as people found out the hard way (as in crashes and fatalities) on the Autobahn in Germany which got us new softer suspension set-ups and the spoiler with ESP (ASC in 2WD) being standard.

actually you are looking at illustration of audi factory response to owner complaints re: "wet disc brake fade" ... the four (4) sets of airfoils redirect airstream water droplets to fall away from front & rear brake rotors/calipers preventing/minimizing water accumulation on rotor surface & leading edge of brake pads ... there were publicity releases & service bulletin regarding this running change ...
both TT/TTQ & S3 received this modification for 2002 model year ... |

wetting the brakes.I think first A4's did not have these front ones and Audi added these after some braking problems on rain.
But you asked the rear ones ? :-)
