well, i knew i was in for a rough ride, and indeed it has been. for those who care, and don't know what i'm up to, here is my original post. in short, i'm trying to custom install ATP's new gen2 stage4 kit, and end up with 400+hp to the crank.
3 weeks ago we found out the hard way that clutchmaster's VR6 clutches don't fit. pretty dumb mistake, since the Vr6 clutch is 228mm and quattro TT's have a 240mm clutch. ATP's solution was to get one custom made by AASCO, since no other solutions were available at the time. long story short, the guy at AASCO was 2 weeks late on delivery, and the guys at ATP are too busy to get this project moving at a rate that i deem acceptable. tomas sport tuning was doing the clutch install (they do lots of jobs for ATP) and they're now doing all of the turbo kit install as well. the clutch disk is 6-puck, carbon/copper composite, and the pressure plate is a stiffened OEM one. it was spec'ed to handle 500ft-lbs (just in case, ya know? hehe) of torque, without being too heavy on the foot or too grabby when engaging. here is the stoptech install done earlier this week (looks like I'll give NASA Racer's curb rash cure a try sometime soon!): ![]() picture of the new single-mass aluminum flywheel (15 lbs): ![]() the entire new clutch assembly weighs about as much as the stock flywheel itself. this picture shows my new pressure plate and clutch cover on the left, and clutchmaster's stage3 VR6 clutch on the right. clutchmaster claims the pressure plate is stock, but you can clearly see a welded joint (close to my ring finger) indicating the pressure plate face has been removed, most likely because the coil springs have been changed to stiffen the pressure plate. AASCO also stiffened my pressure plate, at my bequest, but they properly riveted the face back on, as visible by the small aluminum circle at the corresponding location. ![]() here's a pic of my tranny on the floor (where it has sat for 3 weeks). pretty obvious where the clutch assembly goes, you can see the shifter on top, and the differential jutting out on the bottom left. ![]() the brace they used when lowering the tranny: ![]() what the engine bay looks like from the driverside with the tranny removed, and the crankshaft flange visible ![]() that's all folks! finally get my baby back after 3 weeks!! get all weekend to break-in the brakes and the clutch in preparation for the "fun stuff" next week! =) more pics props: to LarryTT and Emil who helped bring the fuel injector issue to my attention (i'll post about that as we deal with it next week) more props: to stratmosphere, who was ready to rush me one of their new clutch kits on a moments notice. i wish i could have dealt with guys like Pete from the beginning because my car would have been done by now! oh well, in the end, i got a fantastic clutch for a fantastic price. |
