Per a tire comparison program, the 225 is 8.86" wide and the 235 is 9.25". Looking head on, the appearance of width is enhanced by a lower diameter to width ratio. Likewise, a 225-40-18 may appear slightly narrower than the stock 225-45-17 head on. Another example - my Tahoe has 255s but they look substantially narrower than the 225s on my TT because they are so tall (and that ratio is so high).
