Default About to buy a secondhand TT - a few questions first.

I have my eye on a late 1999 225TTQ coupe with Xenon lights, Bose, cd changer, cruise control, heated seats, 17" alloys and 10000 miles.

Is there anything in particular that I should look out for or check before I commit to buying it? It's had the suspension mods and spoiler done.

I want to fit 18" wheels (AEZ Paron ~28lbs). How does it drive with 18s and does the extra weight of the wheels have any adverse effects?

Is a chip upgrade worth it or are there better performance upgrades available - more bang for the buck?

TIA

Default The stock wheels are very heavy- not sure the exact numbers

You will probibly have lighter 18" aftermarket wheels then the stock 17" wheels.

Chip is the best bang for your buck modification. Make sure your dealership is mod friendly otherwise most would suggest a spare ECU- probibly going to run you around $1200 for the whole chip setup.

If you are concerned about handling then most would suggest some kind of suspension mod (coilovers or springs/shocks combo). The stock shocks will probibly be useless after 20K miles anyways.

Good luck!

Do a Carfax on it. Sometimes cars have been in accidents or floods etc.For $20 you can get carfax for two months & do as many cars as you want. I must have done at least 20 cars before I found one I wanted. Take it to a competent mechanic. If you hear a sound like a goose honking around 2500 rpm it might need a diverter valve. Thats not a big deal .Around $200 to replace but it's a bargaining chip.I purchased mine used. Got a good deal & no problems so far.

Default 21lbs is 'very heavy'? (that's the weight of the 5-spoke 17" oem alloys)

the lightest 18" wheel you'll find will be 17-18lbs, and all that 'unsprung weight' talk is a bunch of crap, IMO.

Default If your planning on adding 28lb wheels your adding weight and rotational mass - no benefit at all.

Default However, Factory non forged 17's also weigh 27-28 lbs and the performance numbers for the car with

or without forged wheels aren't any different. If you have the 5 spoke forged wheels and like the look - by all means keep em since they are relatively light and strong. My 18" AEZ's weigh in at 23lbs, not the lightest but lighter than what was on my car stock.

Default Thanks. Didn't realise 17" stock wheels were that heavy. So anything lighter is a bonus.

Default I guess it'll be too much to ask which chip gives...

the best real performance without affecting drivability too much? So far I've only looked at the MTM chip.

Default Thanks for your comments. Are there any mechanical things that I should...

look out for apart from the noise caused by a bad DV?
