PGP, SSL, HTTPS, SPOP, SIMAP, SSH, SCP, etc... are all TCP/IP based encyrption protocols. I will utilize them to protect myself from potential hackers and eavesdroppers.

We all have to be careful about our civil liberties in regards to this crisis...

While taking away various bits and pieces of freedom could very well increase safety, it would also take away a large part of what makes America so great to begin with... Freedom! Like anything powerful, encryption can be used for good or evil. One more thing to remember, is that taking encryption away from the common man will not take it away from the criminals...

I was living in Manila when civil liberties were suspended in 1971. Censorship of the press in particular allowed Marcos to tighten his reins on the power structure, stay in office long past the end of his terms, and steal the country blind. Letters my parents and I sent each other once I returned to the states were opened, read and resealed. It could happen here if we get too carried away. It is not the American way, for sure.
