I've located the rattle coming from the roof from my 01 S8 with 58k. It's the sunroof itself that rattles in the closed position. I also noticed when you close car door the sunroof moves or bounces. The car has been serviced every 10k by the dealer so they should have lubed and cleaned the sunroof tracks. Is there a way for me to fix this, or is it a big job for the dealer? It seems to be getting worse.

With my 2001 A8L with 48k I had this same problem. If you push the sunroof up with your hand too it will move. I had a sporadic leaking problem that the dealer fixed by replacing the rubber piping or something to that effect I'm not exactly sure. The water problem is gone as is the rattling, although you can still push the sunroof up a little bit. Not nearly as far as before though.

Before the rattle problem, I complainted to the dealer about what I viewed as excessive wind noise from the sunroof. They looked at it and said there was nothing wrong. I don't think I have a leak, but the car doesn't see rain very often.

moving against the roof? I assume that there is a rubber barrier between them but I could be wrong.

It doesn't sound like metal hitting metal, if that's what you are asking. It sounds like your basic rattle noise if you know what I mean by that? It looks like there is some type of rubber seal that wraps around the edge of the sunroof where it butts to the roof. Does the sunroof really rely on this seal to secure the sunroof tightly to the roof when closed and keep it from moving and rattling, or do I have some other type of mechanical problem?

with your hand in many cars! I suspect the noise that you ar ehearing is the sunroof rubbing aaginst the body of the car. If thats what it is, maybe some rubber lube would do the trick.

I have a noisy sunroof and after consulting the Bentley CD, I understand there is a very clear adjustment guide (the sunroof should be flush or slightly higher at the trailing edge by 1 mm and flush or below the leading edge) which is not the case for mine (too loow at the trailing edge)But the adjustment entails removing part of the roof liner, which scares me more than the bit of noise....

I had the same problem with mine. I have the (largely worthless ) solar sunroof. Anyway, when it is all the way open, there's a spring loaded plastic bar that pops up at the front of the opening. With the sunroof closed, this bar was juddering up and down against the metal groove in which it sits. On the bottom of the bar there are 3 small hard rubber pads. I covered them by sticking 4"X 1/2" fuzzy side velcro under the bar. Bingo- no more rattling from above my head.

![]() sorry Paul, i had a little too much time on my hands the other night and photoshop was just like..calling to me.. my car is a bog standard silver over black, but i'm toying with the idea of a purply respray. There was a '95 740i in metallic lilac with M wheels on sale here in Portland a short while ago and i nearly bought it because of the color. Sounds iffy, but it just looked cool as heck. Then I remembered it was a "95 740i...... Wheels are 18 X 8 1/2" ADR M sports with some godawful cheap 245/40/18 tires that i can't even remember the name of.....
