--------------------------------------
A brand new engine has been developed by Lamborghini for its new compact sports car, the Gallardo. The engine is a V10 four-valve 5-litre unit with 500 bhp and, unlike the classic V12 Lamborghini, has a V angle of 90 degrees (instead of 60), which is preferred in order to limit the height of the engine and to lower the centre of gravity, together with the adoption of a dry sump lubrication system. The new V10 has an all-aluminium structure and a stroke (92.8 mm) that is much larger than the bore (82.5 mm).

A continuously variable valve timing system and a variable intake geometry manifold provide an optimum distribution of the torque from the lower speed range (410 Nm at 1500) up to the maximum torque of 510 Nm at 4500 rpm, while maximum power is available at 7800 rpm. The exhaust system includes two separate banks with two "five-inone" manifolds. The electronic engine management is provided by an evolution of the Lamborghini LIE unit, connected through a sophisticated CAN BUS network to the main vehicle computer, as well as to the E-gear system and to the other satellite ECUs involved in the vehicle's dynamics. As in the super GT Murcielago, the engine is mid rear mounted, with the 6-speed gearbox (a robotized sequential gear shift unit) behind the engine and a permanent four-wheel-drive viscous traction system.
