Default Historic races 05

On Saturday, we attended the Monterey Historic races. The featured marques were Chaparral, vintage Trans Am racers, and home built specials. This seemed to have the effect of reducing the crowds a bit. Sadly, I did not get any pictures of Stirling Moss driving Jay Leno around the track in the original Mercedes SLR that set the record for the Mille Miglia. For 4 or 5 laps, that wonderful old straight 6 bellowed it's unique song, soon to be silenced as this was it's last outing before entering permanent retirement at a new Mercedes museum. Jay was waving madly at the crowd as the spectators stood and cheered them on. Yes, Jay was mobbed in the pits, and he was a gracious as ever (we also had a short chat with Alain De Cadenet). We avoided Jay, simply so as to not add to the crush.

Phil Hill drove this 3 litre Alfa against 3.5 Jaguars in one run group.

Some great racing Alfas.

The old and the new

Some legendary Testarossas

Jaguar made a good turn-out

Checking knock-offs

Showpiece engine

Time to add some gas.

Race traffic.

A wonderful jewel-like Bugatti engine.

Maserati.

A row of Talbots and Bugattis

There was a nice family atmosphere to this year's races. Lots of funky old cars with unexpected engine/body/frame combinations.

A major operation going on here.

There were lots of really old cars. Some in refreshingly original condition.

The Germans were there in reduced numbers

Gullwing Mercedes.

Neat custom bike.

Lots of vintage Triumphs.

Fabulous woody Packard wagon. Pity there was no good angle for a pic.

The parking lots were full of all sorts of neat cars. Here's the Alfa corral late in the day.

Default Sweet pics...yeah, went last year to the Ferrari historics and like you said, saw

Jay Leno and people were walking up to him non-stop for pics and autographs. I just walked by and said "hey Jay, hows it going" and he actually answered "great, thanks". Was kind of surprised. Too bad I didn't have my Triumph done or would have loved to driven(ok, well trailered it to Monterey)to the track.
