Default Retrofitting Xenon autoleveling system in 99 A6

Hey Teddy, or anyone else who has retro-fitted their cars with Xenon housings, what are you thoughts of retro-fitting the autoleveling system in your cars?

I haven't seen a write-up anywhere on how to perform the retrofit, but I'm thinking trying to pursue the install. Any suggestions? Opinions?

Default It would be pretty involved.. you need the sensors for the front and rear axles,

all of hte necessary wiring, so on and so forth. Probalby not worth the hassle. Easier would be just manually controling the leveling motors.

Default why do you care about auto leveling...you know it only adjusts for load in car

it does not adjust for the road

Default That's a pretty good reason though.. If I had a nickel for every time I was blinded by an oncoming..

car, be it Audi, Benz, whathaveyou that was loaded to the hilt, I'd have enough for at least a full tank of gas.

Default ditto. Too much work. I would probably buy a new A6 with factory Xenons...before I spent anytime..

on this mod.

Just my .02.

Keep us posted....if you do end up figuring it out. The parts alone would have to be $500+ from the dealer.

Good luck!

Default That is the exact point of auto-leveling. It is to compensate for load, as this could dangerously

offset the beam pattern and blind oncomming drivers. The point of the system was never to adjust for the minute bumps in the road...the system is just not that quick enough.

Default but how much load does there have to be to make a significant diffrence?

Default Not much at all. Just think, a few pounds in the trunk and you could be off by a few degrees, which

might not seem like much but the further away you get from the source of the light, the higher up the beam pattern projects.

You don't need much math to calculate a few degrees of movement from the front axle as a working axis, and the corresponding movement on the rear axis from the load created by whatever weight was placed in the rear. Multiply arc measurement by as many times the distance of the oncomming car to the wheelbase and you see how small a difference you really need to effect just a few feet of light from a safe region to a dangerous one.

I guess a simplified demonstration could be performed by opening the trunk, positioning the headlights on a source several feet away, then having a friend sit in the trunk. This would exaggerate a given scenario (unless you regularly carry more than a hundred pounds of stuff in the trunk) but would help illustrate the point. Have two people sit in the rear of the car and see what happens.
