Default Cam adjuster seals and suck valve. Part of a series?

OK, so a few days ago I posted that my wife's A6 2.8, which has never leaked, suddenly began leaking from the cam adjuster seal on the passenger's side. I had planned to wait until Spring when I was going to do the timing belt anyway, but the smell is bothering her, so I decided to do it this weekend (along with the belt, etc.) while she is out of town.

The forum (forget who) directed me to an old post about the "suck pump" (forget who's post). I stopped at Audi to ask about the suck valve and buy some cam adjuster seals. Well, it turns out that they strongly suggest checking/changing the suck pump, a check valve, and the long crankcase vent hose that runs across the front top of the engine to the rear. I just recently replaced the vent pipe so I asked to buy the check valve and suck pump. No problem on the valve, but the pump cannot be bought without first being put on a "waiting list" at Audi. This requires a VIN number. Wow. Apparently, replacing this pump is all the rage. My wait was short and now I have my pumps.

This makes me wonder about the seals. Pressure inside the crankcase has forced oil by the seals. In theory, if I remove the pressure, the seals should stop leaking unless they are damaged. So the plan now is to replace just the breather stuff and the suck pump, wash the engine, and monitor the situation. I will report my findings.

Default That is a valid theory and was the same route I took last winter . .

but, I ended up having to replace the cam adjuster gaskets anyway. I think in my case, once the oil got pushed past the gasket and rubber half moon, it kept leaking.

Hopefully you will have more luck, but you'll know pretty quickly if that didn't work.

I was able to change gaskets on both sides w/o removing the cams. You could just replace the P side and still do the timing belt later without duplicating work much.

Default Thanks for the insight. I hope my luck is better than yours.

If I do anything, I'll do everything. Sometimes it sucks (no pun intended) being AR.

how many suck pumps are there? it looks like you got 2. I had my cam seals go and just had them done so I picked up a suck pump (no wait) do I need a pair?

Default Mine stopped leaking after the blockage in the breather hose was corrected - weather warmed up to

melt the ice plug caused by frozen condensate buildup inside the hose. I could not believe how the engine could leak like a sieve and then heal itself overnight in my garage. In my case the seals must not have been damaged. Check my posts from last January to get the full story.

Default You're welcome.

;-)

Hey, what's the part number on that check valve? I didn't replace that.

And good luck. Hope you don't need to replace seals.
