Default S6 4.2 Tiptronic manual selection doesn't work

Hi,

i'm buying an used S6 4.2 from a friend but the titpronic manual selection doesn't work.
When I move the shifter on the right, the display changes from PRND432 to 54321 and the switches on steering wheel light on, but I can't change the gear.
It stays on last gear it automatically selected before choosing manual mode and display shows the right gear.
Mechanically the gearbox works perfectly and when rpm limit is reached, it goes regularly to upper gear.

My friend says he almost never used manual selecion in the last year and wasn't aware about the problem.
At first time, his AUDI dealer said it was necessary only a chip reset, but after connecting the car to computer, no alarms or any signal of malfunction was found and software reset had no effect.

The dealer says maybe there is an interruption in a connector or a cable (he already disassebled and checked the shifter and no problem was found) and it seems he has no idea how to solve the situation: his suggestion is to check ALL the cables involved in titpronic management around the car...

It means A LOT of working hours and possibly a quite complex disassembly.

I already made a search in Audiworld database but I didn't find a similar problem.

Any suggestion?

Thank you.

Default Warranty? Try another dealer, or just let him have at it.

IIRC, there have been posts about displaced magentic sensors under the shifter causing this kind of problem. Never had it myself, though.

Good luck.

Default Most often the problem is in the position sensor or the connections to that sensor.

Some people have had your problem on the regular A6. The position sensor seems to be the common problem. Not sure if Stoney's FAQ touches on anything.

Now if you said it would stick in just one gear when in D with the PRNDL display lit up, then it would be disconcerting, as this is often the precursor to mechanical transmission problems.

E Mail Paul He may be able to help you. He is an A8 Guy But is very good with electrical stuff and he converted his Non Tip A8 to a tip A8. A couple of weeks ago he recoded my A6 Tranny and some other guy was there with tranny problems on his A8 . They showed me a standard A8 shifter box that they converted to a Tip.
My jaw dropped, I was like Holy Crap. If anyone can help Paul is the guy .

http://www.audipages.com/contact.html</a

Default Probably just a switch

If you slide the shifter over and it goes into tip (54321 on the dash), and it is in tip because it will upshift at redline, I bet it's just a switch in the console.

You say it also has steering wheel controls that don't work?

I've never seen the circuit for the steering wheel controls, so I don't know how it interfaces.....but I think it would be easy to troubleshoot (well, maybe for me).

I wouldn't be too worried about it.

How do you like the tranny recode? Better, worse?

Default Re: S6 4.2 Circuit board

I had to replace my cirucit board (under the shift lever, has three hall sensors and a magnet) a few months back. It somehow developed a crack. No big deal, about $100 as I recall.

Default Friend had similar problem...

Turned out one of the magnets had become displaced. They just clip in place and one had come out and attached itself to another!

Just need to take the shift **** off and unclip the wood surround, then you can get the slider plastic (the ribbed piece that you can see surrounding the lever arm) out. The magnets are attached to that.

Took us about 10 mins to undo, find the problem, fix & replace.
