Default Xenon Headlights.....

Was driving my 2000 A6 4.2 home today and noticed that I could not see my drivers side headlight reflecting off the back of a van in front of me. Came home and checked the headlight, it was on but not reflecting as bright as other side. Pulled the rear casing off of headlight to find bulb laying loose in housing. Bulb also has hole in it near base. Attempted to fasten bulb socket to housing but could not get it to lock in place. Looks like a press and turn locking mechanism. Also, the inner reflector assembly where bulb attaches moves freely from side to side when I apply pressure in an attempt to fasten bulb socket. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Default Yup...internal housings has become dislodged from 1 of its leveling ball-joints.. (more).

These are a bitch to reattach (even with the headlight removed from the car).
This is probably what your housing looks like in it's current state (FYI - this is the appropriate housing for your 4.2).

Here are your options:

1) Have dealer replace housing for $600...or see if they can fix it. If replaced..you can sell your old housing for $150 on ebay.

2) Remove the housing youself and try and reattach the leveling joint yourself.....this is worth a shot..but will require you to possibly remove the bumper to get the housing out.

3) Find a used housing on Ebay for $200-$300. Make sure it is for a 2000-2001 4.2...as there is one specific housing for the pre-2002 4.2. See my link below.

Feel free to drop me an email so we can chat offline. I have taken these housings apart a few times...and dealt with them in this respect.

Glad to help!

Default In fact...this is your lucky day....see ebay auction. This is exactly what you need....

I think that anything between $200 and $250 is a fair closing price.

Good luck!

PS: I has one broken mounting tab...but you can work around that fact.

Default TeddyB..Thanks for the help! (more)

One more question...the ring around the bulb socket for the Xenon bulb..it looks like it fastens by lining up the notches, pressing and turning to lock socket in place. Mine will not turn and lock????? Usually when it comes to these things I am not all thumbs, but can't seem to get this simple thing done. Thanks again man. And thanks for the link!

Default some advice...

try removing the xenon bulb (be careful though...it has has an insolated edge-thingy that can easily break..it runs parallel to the glass tube of the bulb...see pix). When you remove the bulb and the red attachment plug, disconnect the red plug from the bulb....don't touch the glass part of the bulb with you fingers....it's very bad if you get your natural oils on your bulb.

Try reattaching the round clip without the bulb in place....to see if it attaches OK. Then..try to attach it with just the bulb...if OK...then you can attach the red bulb attachement thingy.

This is really hard to do when the housing is attached to the car. Take your time and be patient.

It still sounds like you need to replace the entire housing.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions. Glad to help!
