Default The secret REVEALED...why our valve covers leak

I stop by the dealer today, and see a 2.7t in the air to replace a rear main seal (stay with me here)

I joke that they might as well do the cam/valve cover gaskets while they are at it.

"no need for that" says the tech "we know why they leak"

"The breather pump valve that sits under the Y-Pipe gets clogged, which increases the crankase breather pressure to the point that it blows out the seals.

"No $hit" I say..

yup - we are starting to check them on every older car....

So - who volenteers to pull this little beauty out and see if it is cloggen on thier older car??
Might save you big $$$!!

Default there will be a noticeable burning smell outside the car and through the vents, in some

Default Maybe, Maybe Not

My cam seals and valve cover gaskets were replaced under warranty at around 10,000 miles. To my knowledge, the breather valve was never replaced.

I now have about 28,000 miles on the car and no oil leaks. If the breather valve was bad and caused my oil leak, than the seals and gaskets would have blown out again.

Maybe you are right in many instances. However, I'd bet that for me, there was a different reason for the seal/gasket failure. I'm sure that there is something more going on (like the seals or other component) are badly designed.

Default not sure if you can see the leak...the reply to dallas's post suggest that there is no breather

pump... so i'm just as lost as you are.
