Default My 99 a6 tops out at 30mph!! Help!

My cars battery recently died and I couldnt get it to start up. After sitting for about a week(3 sears stores in greater seattle didnt have the correct battery type). After finally locating a store with the correct battery and installing it my car starts but immediately dies. The only way to keep the car on is to rev the engine. The check engine light went on, but the car continues to die as if it cant get enough gas. When I give it more gas it revs higher but "misses" as if the tank is empty(its full). One another thing is that my last oil change was 6000 miles ago(dont shoot me). I drove halfway to the nearest automotive store, thought better of it and came back home. The car tops out at 30 in 3rd. It seems to idle fine(after I put it in gear), but simply cant go(even with pedal to the metal)

Other observations-
Power windows/fan seem to work
Radio is dead as a door knob.

PLEASE HELP!!! Thanks!

Many people on the board seemed to have been able to replace their battery without a hitch. What exactly needs to be reset?

Default Battery replacement

OK first quick fix is the windows. Do each one one at a time. Roll one down a few inches, then roll it all the way up. After it comes to it's stop let go of the switch and then hold it up again for maybe 2 seconds. That will reset your pinch protection. Do each window, like I said, one at a time. Radio, I'm going to assume you turn it on and it says SAFE on it. You need to get out your owners manual for the radio find the unlock directions. There is a 4 digit code. You will need that code to get the radio out of safe. Many times the code is on the inside of the radio manual on the first page. If you do not have the code do not pick one at random. Go to your local Audi dealer, have the radio removed and they will get the code for you. If you enter the code wrong twice it will lock the radio. As far as the dieing out, you may just need to reset the throttle adaption which you will need a VAG for or see the dealer for. Some cars are real finicky when the battery is disconnected and they won't run right untill it's done. If you are in the Chicagoland area I can do it for you. Good luck.

Default Throttle adaptation can be done w/o a VAG.....

Just turn the key to the "ON" position (so all the warning lights come on but don't start the car). Leave the car like this for 1 minute.

If you pop the hood you can actually hear the "clicking" as the throttle adaptation is done. Once the clicking is done, see if it drives now!

Although, you really shouldn't be getting a CEL so I'm not sure this will fix your running problem. Worth a try though!

Default Yeah, I have heard of that.

I always just did it the way the manual said to do it. Like I said, I have had cars that wouldn't run without it being set.

Default Re: Battery replacement

My radio is dead... the display doesnt show anything. Ive tried pulling the fuse for a minute and putting it back in but no luck. Heres a new one, even when I rev the engine it sounds like its misfiring, when driving it causes my car to lurch.
