Default No brainer Passport 8500 hardwire

This took no more than 5 minutes.

First off, if you don't need the "Smartcord" mute switch, get the "dumb" hardwire cord for $20. I located two wires that feed the map light that have 12V. The red-green wire voltage controls the gradual dimming of the interior lights, so you don't want to use that. The second wire "orange" has 12V all the time. Crimp the tap on that, thread the RJ11 end through the gap between the headliner and the windshield and jam the rest of the wires out of the way. There are also two nice screws available for the ground wire.

It's run for a week this way and no problems. It has power regardless of the position of the "0-1" interior light switch.

I have an 8500 Smartcord (unused) for $20.

Extra cable and fuse holder

Default Yes. Map lights work anytime you push the button.

Default I would not want it on when car is off. Battery drain, and possibly trigger alarm?

... At least if you have an alarm that is sensitive to noise, which perhaps none of us have.

I believe there is some switched 12v available up there. I helped (er, almost helped) install a Valentine One that way.
