Default Free set of valve stem caps to the person who can explain...

... the difference between horsepower and torque in a way that I can understand it. I've read all the usual stuff, and can actually say that stuff back like a parrot; but I have to confess that I really don't understand it.

Extra credit if you can describe the difference between Matt LeBlanc and Tony Danza

(other than the fact that only Danza is an actual Italian-American who portrays the negative stereotypes of Italian-Americans).

Default Torque is a measure of how much work the engine can do.

Horsepower is a measure of how fast the engine can do that work.

Default Torque is what gets you going, Horsepower is what gives you a higher top speed.

Default My take...

Torque is the amount of force required to move something (i.e. a car) at a given rate. HP is the amount of work done over time to move the car. Consider the amount of work required to get a car from start to finish in a 1/4 mile. Torque is a component of that work but HP tells you how much work was required. More work would be required to get the car to the 1/4 mile point in a shorter period of time.

This is probably not a really good explanation because I don't understand it as well as I'd like myself.

Default So you can get going with zero horsepower, and have higher top speed without torque?

Default Torque = angular force available (->acceleration); power = max. rate of application...

of force over distance (overcoming drag, friction, hill-climbing, etc.), the rate of energy use that is available.
