Check out the USA chip info for the S6 at the Wetterauer site. There seems to be some discrepancy between the Wet numbers and Audi quoted output for the same engine.
Then, check the dyno chart and all becomes clear! Audi has been 'sandbagging' and the stock S6 engine actually makes 360 hp at 6200 rpm, which then falls off gently to the quoted 340 hp at 7000 rpm. The torque is as quoted. This little chart explains a few things: 1) Note Finman's rpm (6200) at his top speed during the infamous run. 2) The S6 and S8 engines ARE identical -- Audi has just chosen to quote hp at different RPMs so as not to upstage the 'big dawg' 3) Short of the new Maserati 4.2, this is one of the most impressive smaller-block V8s in existence (but we already knew that). 4) The 4.2 engine in the new A8 is actually a very sightly de-tuned version of the same S engine. Anyway, I had initially been interested in a Wetterauer chip based on previous positive experience (with a Volvo turbo), but had hesitated because they didn't have the dyno results to show and couldn't explain the discrepancies. Now, I think I got to get me one of those!

the 1.8t is the famous example and more well known, a lot more dyno and tests have been done on that vs the 2.8 engines.
the 1.8t is supposedly making 150hp when first debut to protect the then 12 value 172 hp 2.8 and when the 2.8 was raised to 190 with help of mutli values audi was able to raise the turbo to 170 and not the 180 that was allowed on the GTI and Jettas. In reality the turbo cars performed as good if not better than the larger engines. In many cases the 1.8 was dynoed at 135 to 150hp to the front wheel when first debut. The turbo while sluggish under 2000 rpm allow a higher degrees for engine management to sustain a high level of output through out most of the rev range while maintaining better mpg. Also bear in mind that even if the same engine coming from the same factory and design can very in output about 10%. For it won't be hard to find a S6 that has more horsepower than the S8. However, in most acceleration tests published by reputable magazines varified that S8 outperformed the S6 in most cases and I doubt that S8 is lighter than the S6. |

It's got the right gearing for a fast 0-60 and 1/4 mile time, yet nobody can get that thing even close to 6 seconds flat. Even with the automatic transmission and the portly weight of the S6 avant chassis, I would expect 0-60 and 1/4 mile times of 5.7/14.1 to 5.9/14.3 with that kind of power.
If anyone wants to sell their slow S6 though, I might be interested...

Witness the Honda S2000 vs Porsche Boxter -- Based on weight and hp the S2000 should blow away the boxster, but it makes all its power at (very) high rpm.
Similarly, based on weight and hp, the S6 should be more competitive with an M5 (minus a few ticks for the tip). However, the stock S6 has a smaller discplacement V8 (than the M5), which doesn't make much more torque than a non-S 4.2. So, for the North American 0-60 and 1/4, there's not that much real-world difference. Now, get the damn thing rolling a bit and the gap widens quickly. 100-200 km/hr (62-125 mph) is really quick, both perceived and by the clock, and it takes a forced induction V8 or V12 to really show an S6 its heels!

you'll find that they're identical -- including the date/time stamps on the plot.
So, they re-used the chart and hoped nobody would notice.

...besides, for an engine that revs to over 7000rpm (and still makes 340hp at that point), a true peak hp of 360 at a "mere" 6200rpm is quite potent, and not peaky at all. The S6 should be trapping the quarter at about 100-101mph with this power.

Doesnt it run ~100 in the 1/4? At about 14.5?? It has to be a dog outta the hole though. It has to make up for it on the backside with HP.
Course its designed to be a freeway hauler.
