While I'm waiting for my 2.7t to come in......My dad is out of town so I'm driving his 4.2. Last night twice I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. Kinda funky. Is there something I'm missing? Has this ever happened b4 to anyone? I wiggle the wheel and shifter but no luck. Hmmm Then after a short drive it will come out.

Let my cousin drive my 4.2 and he couldn't get the key out of the ignition...and neither could I.
So, after a little frustration I called to dealer, and one of the salesman knew exactly what happened. My cousin put the car in park and most likely held the tip button also, which locked it up. I just put my foot on the brake, slipped to tranny into neutral, then eased it into park again. This unlocked the tranny and the key...must happen alot if a sales person knew exactly what I was going through! Mike Gross '00 4.2 '01 allroad on the way |

The same happend to me a couple of times. The tip stick always felt "weak" in it's position (no clack sound) - obviously some sensors did not realise that is was already in P position. To resume the situation I had to start the engine again, drive a little forth and back - may be a second try needed - and everything was back to normal... My car goes next monday for the final warranty check to the dealership (here in Europe we have only ONE year of warranty with no milage limit - and no free service!) and this is one of the issues to be fixed.
In general I had a lot of electronic "glitches" in my car - never had a problem which lasted but annoying anyways! Ernst A6 4.2Q / balck & vanilla / sports packg. / Xenons / NavPlus |

but it was always a matter of turning the wheel just a little to get it off the lock.

Same thing happens if you move shift lever too quickly from Tip mode back to Drive and then to Park. Moving lever back to Tip mode and then more slowly back to Drive etc resolves the lock-up, ie, the sensors sense.
