Default Results from my 68k oil analysis (8k interval, 6 track days, Mobil 1 0W40)

Last time, I ran my interval a little long (9073 miles) and had a resulting increase in iron (32ppm). They chastised me a bit and recommended an 8k interval this time. Here are the results:

"We have nothing but good news to report in the latest sample from your Audi. Iron dropped nicely and all other wear remained steady, reading right around average for this type of engine. That's a very good indication that your 2.7L engine has normally wearing parts and is being operated carefully. Insolubles (mostly oil oxidation due to heat and use) were low at 0.2%, showing good oil filtration. The viscosity read well within the normal range for a 0W/40 oil and no fuel dilution or anti-freeze was present. At 68,137 total miles, this engine is doing very well."

(ppm; number in parentheses is the average):

Aluminum - 3 (3)
Chromium - 1 (1)
Iron - 18 (20)
Copper - 8 (5)
Lead - 0 (0)
Tin - 0 (0)
Moly - 62 (62)
Nickel - 0 (0)
Manganese - 0 (0)
Silver - 0 (0)
Titanium - 0 (0)
Potassium - 1 (1)
Boron - 98 (103)
Silicon - 8 (9)
Sodium - 2 (4)
Calcium - 2236 (2486)
Magnesium - 12 (29)
Phosphorous - 659 (685)
Zinc - 759 (820)
Barium - 0 (0)

SUS Viscosity - 66.7 deg. F (should be 65-76)
Flashpoint - 400 deg. F (should be > 375)
Fuel - < 0.05% (should be < 2%)
Antifreeze - 0 (should be 0)
Water - 0 (should be < 0.1%)
Insolubules - 0.2% (should be < 0.6%)

1/4 qt make-up oil added; oil was in the car 6 1/2 months

If you want to read my past analyses, they're all linked in my sig below.

Default Well, you tested two things...

1. How long the oil can go in your car.
2. That Blackstone doesn't write flattering feel-good prose for all their clients.

So thanks for that!

Default obviously changing oils for you is not an option, I believe once you run a certain oil stick with it

until rebuild etc.

I have a buddy who has done some major oil analysis for top companies.

he swears by amsoil.

he even told me about that little commercial mobil one had with the frying pan next to conventional oil. (the mobil one ran away from the heat on the frying pan)- so they used a diff oil.He even built a motor for testing for them and ran it at 5000 rpms for 120 hours until it blew up. mobil todl him he built the motor incorrectly and thats why it blew. So mobil one built a motor and it blew in less time..

Those stories have stayed with me for a while i dont touch mobil one.

im curious to see what a real world analysis of the other oils out would turn up. just to see if mobil has changed since the inception.

say like
castrol 0w-30
amsoil 0w-30

etc.....

Default Amsoil has too many phosphors. Skip, IMO.

Default I did it out of curiousity at first. Then, I realized that it may give me advance warning

of some internal engine problems down the road, so I stuck with it. A nice consequence is that they helped me extend my oil intervals (now 8k - started at 5k). A benefit that I'll probably never use is that it might be of interest to a potential buyer if I'd ever sell.
