I ask for 2 reasons:
#1) If the bushing in the turbo is bad I assume it could leave metal shavings in the oil causing other bearing damage throughout the motor. #2) Although I havent driven it much since the turbo went out, when I do it runs rough as if its running rich and trying to foul a plug. It will misfire for severl minutes and then clear up. The car is not smoking but man its loud. Your advice appreciated.

My passenger side turbo died one day last fall and I continued to drive it for three days. During that time it made a lot of noise but didn't smoke at all, and there was just enough power to get up to freeway speed. The car idled fine during this time. Eventually the impeller of the turbo worked it's way out of the bushing and ended up in the downpipe, allowing the oil to pour into the exhaust and create a three lane wide smokescreen, which the cops didn't like. I didn't want to force all of the oil out the exhaust and seize the engine so I had it towed and started tearing it apart a couple days later. There was some galling in the impeller side casting where the impeller had come loose and contacting the wall, but it didn't appear as though any "shavings" made it into the return line. Regardless, I replaced the turbos and the car runs great now.

I had pretty much decided on parking it until its fixed. Do you just have K04's or have you upgraded your fueling?

unless you have severe oil contamination then the bearing wear from a "blown" K03 isn't going to be such that it's going to be leaving anykind of substantial deposits in your oil.
I wouldn't recommend driving the car though, you're just asking for more issues. Many things could happen that have the ability to cause more damage or just more headache when you go to swap in the new turbos. You could damage a sealing ring more and cause large amounts of oil to go into your intake system.....a wheel could start to hit the housing walls and eventually start putting material into your intake system......a shaft could break and dump oil/material into your exhaust system. If at all possible just better not to drive the car until you have the turbo issue fixed...my 2cents |

going to go full stage 3? Just looking for something to swap the K03's with for a little added power/reliability?
