Default Is the metal jacket necessary on the Odyssey batteries?...

I'm planning on getting either the 680 or 925 (depending on how gutsy I'm feeling at time of purchase - I live in SF with temps always 50F-75F with occasional trips to mountain where temps are 10F-35F...never far from an outlet for trickle charging either).

I noticed that you can get each battery with or without the metal jacket (which weighs about 2lbs). Is it necessary? What's the function - heat protection? I see that our S4 location is behind a barrier wall which separates the battery from the engine bay so is heat an issue? TIA.

Default I would skip the jacket for sure if I mounted it with their aluminum battery box.

I'm not sure how important it is otherwise.

Default The jacket is to protect the battery from heat.

AGM batteries are very sensitive to overheating. Their life drops very quickly if overheated. The critical temp is not that high.

So if mounted behind the firewall you need the metal jacket. If mounted away from the engine compartment then the metal jacket is probably not needed.

Mine is temporarily mounted in the front of the car. When I move it to the back I will remove the metal jacket.
