Default How to find Tip Tranny leaks in 5 easy steps (Warning: Tip Content - 6spd intolerant)

Leon: "Nothing is worse than having an itch you can never scratch".

This leak has been annoying me for a while - of course it only leaks when hot, and as it's coming from the top, so it's impossible to get at while running. I've tried mirrors and endoscope/boroscope and even pulled it apart once before, and still couldn't find it - so here's a clue for future adventurers:

Step 1 - Drop sub-frame, lower tranny
Step 2 - Cover top of tranny in talcum powder*
Step 3 - Re-assemble
Step 4 - Run car
Step 5 - Drop sub-frame, lower tranny, take photo's

The discoloration is from the ATF - the leak seems to come from the primary diff seal, near this very unusual through-hole (that goes nowhere).

It's been a long night - time for bed, and talk to ZF agent tomorrow. I hope I only have to pull the diff and replace the seal - I'm really not looking forward to pulling/refitting tranny without a hoist :-(

*-I happened to have a bottle of "Denorex" handy, bonus: Tranny will never get athlete's foot.

Default OT: Did you swap the RS6 wheel in yourself? How was that? Tips? I think that's awesome.

Default I think the problem is that you did not use a colonoscope. An endoscope.....

may not get you the view you need.

Advance the colonoscope SLOWLY up your cars exhaust until it burbles. Don't forget the lube.

Default It's an easy swap, plenty of documentation on Tech Tips

Just be sure to start with wheels straight ahead. Line up the steering wheel notches with the groves on the steering shaft the same on new wheel.

The Airbag must be the 2002~2004 style, your current air-bag won't fit. Since you need to disconnect the battery while replacing the AirBag - so you also need VAG-COM to clear codes.

By the way I have another RS6 wheel & AirBag ... ;-)
