Default My ongoing quest to solve the time issues between B5 clusters & the RNS-E (calling EU S4 owners)

In a nutshell: there is a problem in the communication between B5 S4 gauge clusters and the RNS-E navigation units (newer clusters transmit the data differently; with a B5 cluster the RNS-E ETA times are off). This is the ONLY compatibility issue not solved at this point, and I am on a frickin' mission here to solve it!

Here is my question:

Are there any 1999 S4 owners on here (EU of course)? If so, you have an analog clock in your display, correct? I've seen some in passing on Ebay.de before, and never gave them much thought until now. If so, could you possibly use your VAG-COM (hopefully I can find a 1999 S4 owner in the EU with a VAG-COM...lol), and record all of the coding info for me? My thought is, as it has been, that there is some VAG-COM adaptation setting in the cluster which will disable the clock data from being transmitted. It has already been determined that when the clock signal is not present (e.g., when the cluster is not connected to the RNS-E), the RNS-E time source changes to "Time from GPS" instead of "Time from Instrument Cluster", and everything is perfect.

If you can help, please let me know. Thanks :-)

Default I seem to remember seeing a "clock" connection on the back of the RNS-E Unit

I meant to look it up to see if another wire could be run from the instrument cluster. Any thoughts on this?

Default IIRC, that has something to do with the CD Changer, not the actual clock.

The clock time/date data is transmitted via the CAN network.

Default If you could just go through each adaptation channel and record the values, as well as...

the overall coding of the cluster, that would be great. There are 255 adaptation channels, and many will be blank, but I am hoping [fingers-crossed] that one of them will be different from mine because of the analong clock.

Thanks in advance for taking the time to help with this :-)

Default 255 - you gotta be kidding me !!

Seriously, which module am I looking in, and do I start at 001 and go to 255 (never touched the instrument module before!)

Is there an easy way to log this, or is it a pen and paper job?

Default Only takes about 3 minutes to go through all of them.

Just go to the "Instruments" module, and then click on "Adaptation". It'll start you at "1" and then just go up from there, recording any values displayed for the different channels. As I said, most of them will be empty, so you can go through them all rather quickly.

As for the overall coding, just click on "Recode" in the same "Instruments" module, and copy down that number.

Thanks again for taking the time to do this. It may (hopefully) help a bunch of us out :-)

Default An example

Here's a spreadsheet I made in Excel comparing the adaptation and coding values of an EU RNS-E unit versus a US one. Hope that helps.

Default I'm still in need of those brackets so that I can connect my RNS-E to the cluster...

can anyone part with 2? (everyone has 2 extra in their stock cluster). I'll gladly pay for this. TIA
