Default State Farm and coverage on tracks...

A few weeks ago somebody linked to a thread on a BMW board where a poster indicated his policy was recently changed to disallow any coverage on tracks (regardless of whether it is a DE, school, etc.).

I just got my State Farm renewal in PA, and I see no such amendment to the policy. Now I know state law protects the insurance companies by absolving them of liability if a loss occurs during the course of a speed contest, or in preparation of the same, so in PA they already have some level of protection from track related claims.

In any event, the post on the BMW forums didn't provide much detail, and I haven't seen any such change made to my policy. I do want to review it to make sure they didn't slip such a clause in there sometime in the past...but I doubt I'll find anything. If you're insured with State Farm...take some time to read the amendments in your next renewal...just in case.

Default I'm in Illinois & my renewal also doesn't have such an amendment

I don't have the full written policy on hand, though.

I think I would feel more comfortable calling and asking b/4 I pay for a track event. If they DIDN'T cover an incident, that would suck....and I wouldn't forgive myself for not asking

Default If they say no & back it up with the contract, I would change my insurance in a heartbeat

I don't understand how everyone can be so subversive about this issue. Will you really risk a $20k loss b/c you are too chicken to find out what the terms of coverage are? And what is the point of insurance that doesn't insure?

Default He didn't say don't ask...

He just warned you about asking a direct question. The way around is to ask for a copy of your policy. Look through the terms yourself to see what's covered.

Default I will certainly do that. It just sucks that they look at DEs in such a negative light

I wonder what the stats are on overall claims for DE participants (on & off track) vs those without the experience.

Default I called my agent and talked for 20 minutes. He called around and said I am fine, provided...

I am not doing it for $ or competition. If it is timed or I get finacially compensated, all bets are off.

Default It is a bit rediculous - I'd think most people who do these DE are MUCH better drivers than.....

the average Joe. That would make it much less likely you'd file a claim from something that happens on the road. Better car control = less claims.

It is unlikely you'll ball up your car at a DE, seems sort of stupid not to cover it since only a tiny, tiny percentage of people do DE.

I bet if you looked at the statistics, there are less claims from enthusiasts who attend DE than the general public.

On the other hand, maybe the people who attend DE drive more aggresively on the street and it's the opposite...I have no idea, just speculating.
