Default Turbine Inlet Pressure (TIP) testing, Part I.

Ray(Ochlockonee)sent me his TIP tester. Brown left it for me when I got home today so I promptly installed it and went for a spin.

Midrange tip/manifold pressure ratios were around .85:1. 19 to 23.5. Top end it picked up to a peak of 42/22.5 or 1.87:1. This didn't vary much throughout the gears, maybe a PSI or so.

Even more amazing: Ray said this gauge is off about 4psi on the top end of the range over his "good" gauge he used for his measurements. SO, tip is 37/22.5 or 1.69:1

I was expecting a shade under 2:1 but this is darned impressive. I'm going to drive with it for a week or so and further measure TIP under all kinds of driving circumstances and boost levels. I'm also enlisting/conscripting other local K04 guys to get some more data

Thanks for letting me borrow the tester Ray!

Default Well, TIP is a pretty nasty thing...

Basically, the higher the TIP the more problems you have regarding having exhaust properly expelled out of the engine and through the turbo itself. You can have exhaust gases revert into the combustion chambers and choke the entire system.

Normal TIP for an OE designed turbocharger is around 2:1. Some are more, some are less. TIP is affected by the AR of the turbine housing and the turbine outlet size as well as the size of the turbine itself.

Being as I have an overboosted version of a turbocharger with a very small turbine/housing, anything under 2:1 is damned impressive.

Default With the amount of air you're moving, that is very impressive. Clearancing

seemed to work, didn't it? Heh.
