Default Breaking in new engine

As some of you may know, the engine in my 2000 S4 went kaput, the car is in the process of having a new engine installed. Since I never owned this car from day one, I am un-familiar with it's breakin procedure.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Jerry D

Default I don't recall the specifics of it, but IIRC it was to take it easy for the first 1000 miles.

Default Oh, and it should be in the owners manual, if you've got that.

Default Isn't this a long-standing debate? I've read all sorts of articles that say the best way to...

break in an engine is to drive it hard, right away...

I'll try to find some links later...

Default I've heard both sides. Personally, I prefer to take it easy in the beginning.

I thought there was something in the manual about that too, but it was over 5 years ago so I don't really remember.

Default Think I'd be at the strip running 5-pass rungroups(4 of them, raising shift rpms 500 after each

group) but that's me =-)

Most close tolerance engines establish permanent wear patterns and ring seating in the first 100 mi or less. After that "what ya got is what ya got."

Default My curiosity was sparked (and I don't feel like doing any actual work) so I went and got my manual.

For MY2001, it says:

Break-in period
During the first few hours of driving, the engine's internal friction is higher than later when all moving parts have been broken in. How well the break-in process is done depends to a considerable extent on the way the vehicle is driven during the first 1,000 miles (1,500 kilometers).

For the first 600 miles (1,000 km):

As a rule of thumb:
-Do not use full throttle.
-Do not drive faster than 3/4 of the top speed shown on the speedometer
-Avoid high engine speeds
-If possible, avoid towing a trailer.

From 600 to 1,000 miles (1,000 to 1,500 km):
Speeds can gradually be increased to maximum permissible road or engine speed.

I'd stick with that for a new engine since that's Audi's recommendation.
